Full summary

In May 2021, Mayor Eric Garcetti nominated John Wirfs to the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument Authority to fill a vacancy left by Sal DiCostanzo's resignation, for an initial term ending June 30, 2022. The nomination cleared the Arts, Parks, Health, Education, and Neighborhoods Committee in June 2021 and was adopted by Council on June 16, 2021. When that term expired, the Mayor submitted a reappointment in July 2022 for a four-year term ending June 30, 2026. The committee approved it in August 2022, and Council adopted it 10-0-5 on August 24, 2022. On August 11, 2026, Mayor Karen Bass submitted a new reappointment letter to Council, nominating Wirfs for an additional term ending June 30, 2030. His most recent term had expired on June 30, 2026. Bass certified that Wirfs is "especially qualified by reason of training and experience" and that the appointment is made "solely in the interest of the City." Wirfs is a Senior Project Manager by profession, a Council District 1 resident from East LA, and holds a Bachelor of Architecture from USC. Before joining the El Pueblo commission in 2021, he served on the City's Cultural Affairs Commission from 2016 to 2021, including a term as its president. The nine-member El Pueblo commission, which oversees the historic birthplace of Los Angeles, currently includes commissioners representing East LA, Central LA, South LA, and West LA. Wirfs is one of two Asian Pacific Islander members on the body. The 2026 reappointment was referred to the Arts, Parks, Libraries, and Community Enrichment Committee on August 12, 2026, where it remains pending and awaiting a confirmation vote by the full Council.
