In 2025, approximately 2,000 tickets were issued in error on routes that were not swept, though only about 350 of those were paid without reimbursement before cancellation. On coordination, StreetsLA sends LADOT a daily notice of canceled routes so enforcement officers can rescind any citations already issued. However, LADOT has no dedicated street sweeping enforcement unit, and staffing shortages make it impossible to assign officers to precede or follow sweepers in real time. The report explicitly states that true simultaneous enforcement is not feasible with current staffing levels and would require significant additional resources. The departments also examined mounting automated license plate reader technology directly on street sweepers as a potential solution, but concluded that California Vehicle Code would need to be amended before such use would be legally permitted. The Public Works Committee reviewed and approved the report as amended on August 12, 2026, and transmitted it to the Transportation Committee.
