Full summary

In October 2025, Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky, seconded by Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, introduced a motion to develop menopause-friendly workplace policies and support programs for Los Angeles City employees. The initiative recognizes menopause as a significant life transition that can affect work performance and employee wellbeing, and seeks to address it through concrete city policy. The motion adopted by Council unanimously 15-0 on December 12, 2025 included a December 5 amendment directing the Civil and Human Rights and Equity Department, in partnership with the Commission on the Status of Women, to take four specific actions: convene roundtables with city employees across various career paths who have lived experience of menopause; research how other cities globally, including London and Melbourne, have moved to better support employees and residents experiencing menopause; report back within 120 days, and iteratively thereafter, on how Los Angeles can better support those needs and foster city-wide dialogue about menopause and its impacts; and report back on what steps the city would need to take to earn official accreditation as a Menopause-Friendly Workplace. The Personnel and Hiring Committee approved the motion on November 5, 2025, before full Council adoption. Following the Civil and Human Rights and Equity Department's submission of a responsive report in early August 2026, the City Clerk issued a corrected referral adding the Civil Rights, Immigration, Social Services and Neighborhoods Committee as a reviewing body alongside Personnel and Hiring. The Civil Rights committee scheduled and then on September 11, 2026 continued the item without action to a date to be determined. The file remains active and pending in both committees. While the unanimous Council vote and the department's responsive report signal clear momentum, no final policy framework or accreditation pathway has yet been formally adopted.
