The Mayor nominated Alfred Mata for an extension of his interim appointment as City Engineer. The proposal was referred to the Public Works Committee in late November 2025, where it sat through mid-January 2026. Council voted unanimously 15-0 on May 19, 2026 to approve the extension, which will remain effective through May 2028.

Full summary

Mayor Karen Bass submitted a request in November 2025 to extend the interim appointment of Alfred Mata as City Engineer under City Charter Section 508(c), which requires Council confirmation. Mata has held the Interim City Engineer title since June 2025, after spending the previous five years as a Deputy City Engineer overseeing the Bureau of Engineering's Clean Water Infrastructure Program. In her transmittal letter, Bass certified that Mata is "especially qualified by reason of training and experience" and that the appointment is made "solely in the interest of the City." Mata is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer who has worked for the City's Bureau of Engineering continuously since 1993. As Interim City Engineer, he leads an organization of 841 budgeted positions with a $119 million operating budget, overseeing 27 divisions and district offices, 13 capital improvement programs covering more than 500 projects valued at over $5 billion, and a permitting operation that issues roughly 20,000 public right-of-way construction permits annually. His prior roles included managing major projects such as the $588 million Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement and serving as assistant program manager for the $500 million Proposition O stormwater bond program. The appointment extension was referred to the Public Works Committee, chaired by Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, where it was held from late November 2025 through a January 2026 committee session before advancing to the full Council. On May 19, 2026, the Council confirmed the extension by a unanimous 15-0 vote. The appointment is now valid through May 19, 2028.
