Council adopted it unanimously 12-0-3 on April 22, 2026.

Full summary

Councilmember Ysabel Jurado introduced this motion in response to ongoing federal investigations into Waymo-operated autonomous vehicles in Los Angeles. The motion directs two parallel tracks of City inquiry: one focused on safety and regulatory implications, and one focused on the City's financial exposure from autonomous vehicle-related litigation. On the safety track, the Chief Legislative Analyst, working with the City Attorney, is instructed to report on the status, scope, and key issues in the active NTSB and NHTSA investigations involving Waymo. That report must cover preliminary findings, safety and enforcement recommendations, and any implications for the City's own policy, regulatory authority, and oversight of autonomous vehicle operations. On the financial track, the City Clerk, working with the Controller and City Attorney, is instructed to report on the City's litigation liability, including the total funds spent or allocated for claims, settlements, judgments, and legal costs; the number and nature of pending and resolved autonomous vehicle claims; and any anticipated or contingent liabilities tied to autonomous vehicle operations in the city. The motion was referred to both the Transportation Committee and the Budget and Finance Committee when introduced in February 2026. The Transportation Committee approved an amended version on February 25, and the Budget and Finance Committee approved it at a special meeting on April 13. The Westside Neighborhood Council submitted a community impact statement in support. Council adopted the item 12-0-3 on April 22, 2026, and the action became final on April 24. The file is now closed, with reports from the CLA and City Clerk pending.
