Full summary
Demetri Lamar Alexander was shot and killed on December 29, 2020, while standing in a parking lot at 3502 West Slauson Avenue. He was struck by gunfire from an unknown shooter or shooters and died from his injuries the following day. Despite a full investigation, LAPD detectives were unable to identify any suspects, and Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson, representing the 8th District, introduced a motion in April 2026 — more than five years after the killing — arguing that a financial reward could prompt members of the public to come forward with useful information. The motion, seconded by Councilmember Heather Hutt, authorized a city reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, apprehension, and conviction of whoever is responsible for Alexander's death. The reward is set to remain active for six months from the date the City Clerk publishes the official notice. The motion made the required findings under the Los Angeles Administrative Code, including that the death resulted from willful misconduct, that the unapprehended suspect or suspects represent a continuing public safety threat, and that the crime warrants a reward as a matter of public policy. Beyond the standard city reward publications, the motion specifically directed the City Clerk to advertise the reward in three Black community-focused outlets — the Los Angeles Sentinel, Our Weekly, and the LA Watts Times — to ensure the notice reached the neighborhoods most connected to the case. The Council approved the motion 13-0-2 on April 29, 2026. The file was transmitted to the Mayor on May 1, and mayoral action was finalized by May 11, 2026, closing the file.
